God of War Ragnarok performance or quality is an important question to answer when starting the game. God of War Ragnarok is a PS5 game that takes full advantage of the power of the console. Performance and resolution modes are the two main options you have regarding how to play the game, but there are more options for those with the equipment to handle it. Here is a breakdown of those options, to help you choose between God of War Ragnarok performance or resolution modes.

God Of War Ragnarok Performance Vs Quality: Options

Whether playing on PS4 Pro or PS5, you have graphical options to choose from. On a base PS4, the game runs at 1080p and 30 frames per second, there are no other options. Once we move up to the PS4 Pro, we start to get some options. The PS4 Pro has two graphical options, performance mode and resolution mode. Performance mode limits the game to 1080p, but increases the frame rate, targeting 40-50 frames per second. Resolution mode focuses on fidelity, boosting the resolution to 1440p and locking the game to 30 frames per second.

Then we have the big one, the PS5 version. Again, there are two modes to choose from. Performance mode gives the game a buttery smooth 60 frames per second, with a respectable resolution minimum of 1440p, targeting 4K. The game has impressive resolution upscaling that, even when the game is not running at native 4K, manages to keep the resolution quality extremely high. Conversely, the resolution mode does keep the game solidly at 4K, but reduces the frame rate to a locked 30 frames per second.

God Of War Ragnarok Performance Vs Quality: Extra PS5 Features

The extra horsepower of the PS5 can really be taken advantage of if you have the right display to go with it. Playing God of War Ragnarok on a PS5 connected to a 4K TV with higher potential frame rates and a HDMI 2.1 connection can get even more out of the game. Using a HDMI 2.1 connection unlocks two more graphical modes, favour resolution mode and favour performance mode.

Favour resolution locks the game at 4K, just like the base resolution mode. However, it also boosts the frame rate up to 40 frames per second, giving you a bit more performance along with the full 4K resolution. Favour performance gives you a similar 1440p resolution that can upscale to 4K, but unlocks the frame rate. For TVs that can handle it, this can lead to frame rates in excess of 100 frames per second. More likely, the frame rate will hover between 70 and 90 frames per second, much higher than we are used to seeing from a console game.

That is it for the various differences between God of War Ragnarok performance and resolution. For more details about the game, check out our breakdown of God of War Ragnarok all difficulty options.
