The realm of Niflheim has undergone some serious changes in God of War Ragnarok, to the extent that it doesn't operate at all like it did in the last game. If you remember, Niflheim in the first God of War game was home to the rogue-like style challenge that saw Kratos fending off waves of enemies for loot.

There was also a hidden Valkyrie hidden amongst the mists. However, all of that is scrapped for brand-new functionality in God of War Ragnarok. Here's everything you need to know about Niflheim in God of War Ragnarok.

God of War Ragnarok: How To Unlock Niflheim

You'll unlock Niflheim relatively early in the main story of God of War Ragnarok. If you've not yet discovered how to get there, simply keep playing through the main path story missions and you'll eventually unlock a means of travelling to the realm of mist.

The first thing you'll come across when you first enter Niflheim is the new combat practice arena. Opposite Brok's forge is a large, open arena with a tall pillar in the centre. Interacting with this pillar will bring on endless waves of enemies of your choice. This is your chance to practice any new combat skills or weapons that you've picked up on your travels.

There are a few things to keep in mind with the Niflheim combat practice. First of all, you don't earn any XP points for defeating enemies here, so there's no chance of grinding to level up. However, you do still earn progression towards the challenges associated with your weapons and attacks. It's certainly worth heading here if you're looking to level up a particular skill.

As you encounter more enemies throughout the Nine Realms, more enemy waves will be unlocked in Niflheim. Simply choose the enemy you'd like to fight from the pillar and you're set to go. These enemies will spawn continuously, so you'll need to interact with the pillar once again to escape the arena and continue your journey.

What's more, following the path in the Mist Fields section of Niflheim will find you one of the Berserker Gravestone locations - pitting you in one of the game's hardest optional boss fights.

Odin's Ravens in the first game served as a mere collectable, however, they serve much more of a purpose in God of War Ragnarok. The neon green spectral birds that you destroy throughout the Realms will end up here.

You'll spot a collection of chests at the base of the Raven Tree in Niflheim - the more Ravens that you destroy, the more chests you will be able to unlock. These chests contain some seriously good loot, so it's definitely worth hunting these Ravens down and checking back here regularly.

If you're struggling to find Odin's Ravens, our biggest tip is to keep an ear out for them. They let out a signature screech when you're nearby and emit a bright green glow. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled above as that's where they usually like to hide, just out of eyeshot.
