There's the ominous whirr of a chugging chainsaw, as one of the Game Awards' more gruesome announcements unveiled game based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Leatherface is looking for a new bath of victims, but this time, he's not alone.

Since the release of Tobe Hooper's OG The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974, the world of horror movies has never been the same. Leatherface is up there with Freddy, Jason, Michael, and the rest, so isn't it about time he got a "facelift" for modern gamers?

Who Is Coming To The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Game?

Gun Media has only acquired the rights to the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, meaning the extended Sawyer family and fan-favourite killers like Chop Top are out of bounds. Instead of just relying on Leatherface and the game getting stale, the franchise's co-creator has helped devs out.

On the official Texas Chainsaw Massacre site, there's confirmation that Kim Henkel has worked on the terrifying title. Away from Leatherface, The Cook, and The Hitchhiker, brand-new killers are on the way to the expansive lore of the horror favourite.

In a statement, Ronnie Hobbs, Creative Director, Gun Interactive said: "It was quickly apparent that we would need additional family members in order to create the type of team-based multiplayer experience we were after.

"As interesting as The Cook, Hitchhiker, and Leatherface are, three killers simply wouldn't be enough to sustain the game for long periods of time. We needed more. Luckily, Kim Henkel came through again to help us solve this issue.

"Kim had several ideas for additional characters that never made it into the 1974 film, but ultimately he allowed us to create new Slaughter family members on our own. This level of trust meant the world to me. I knew each new family member had to be unique and memorable, while at the same time looking like they belonged. To put it simply, they needed to stand out, but not in a negative way."

"While I can't discuss specific character details, I can say a considerable amount of time and work went into crafting each of the new killers. Each one took well over a year from start to finish, and it's an aspect of the game that myself and the team is quite proud of."

What Else Do We Know About The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Game?

Gun Media previously worked on an asymmetrical Friday the 13th: The Game and faced similar problems. With Jason being the big bad of the franchise, the game introduced various versions of the character from over his time on the silver screen. From his first appearance in Friday the 13th Part II through to the space-age Jason X, he had plenty of outfit changes.

It's harder to introduce Leatherface variants, so at least we'll be getting an extended Slaughter family to play with in Gun's Texas Chainsaw Massacre offering. Much like how Behaviour Interactive has delivered an impressive roster of unique creations alongside Leatherface and co, in Dead by Daylight, we're excited to see what Gun Media is cooking up at the Sawyer Ranch.

There's a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre coming to Netflix next year, and as well as Leatherface being a firm favourite in DbD, Gun Media's game is well-timed to get the blood flowing once again in The Lone Star State.
