Can you hear the sound of clicking? It must mean HBO's live-action The Last of Us is moving forward. With Chernobyl's Craig Mazin at the helm, and a duo of Game of Thrones alumni taking the leads, Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal are ready to take on the apocalypse as Ellie and Joel.

While there's no official release date for The Last of Us, filming has got underway in Alberta, Canada - with production due to last through to next June.

Now, the first set photos have made their way online and shown how the series has swapped a Canadian backdrop for somewhere familiar to the games.

What do The Last of Us set photos show?

Shared by Twitter account @necromnica1, the first set photos tease the opening of The Last of Us as a faithful adaptation of the source material. For those familiar with 2013's record-breaking game, The Last of Us kicked off with Joel and Tommy Miller trying to escape a zombie outbreak with Joel's daughter, Sarah. Remembering this, it would explain the heavy police and SWAT presence in the pilot.

It might look like there isn't much to go off here, but with promises that The Last of Us will honour the legacy of Naughty Dog's game by retreading familiar ground, it's over to players to try and decipher what's next for the cast of characters.

What's next for The Last of Us?

We won't spoil anything here, but if The Last of Us follows the linear path of the first game, we can expect a major time jump - possibly in the second episode. The first set photos come off the back of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Gabriel Luna sharing a photo of himself alongside Pascal and Nico Parker.

In The Last of Us, Luna plays Tommy, while Parker portrays Sarah. Assuming pilot director Kantemir Balagov sticks to the game's opening, it suggests we might not see Rasmey in the first episode, unless she's saved for a last-minute cameo. It also remains to be seen whether The Last of Us will stick with the massive 20-year time jump and use CGI to de-age the likes of Pascal and Luna, or if things will be streamlined.

Either way, now that the first set photos are out, expect your feeds to be filled with official cast photos and unofficial set snaps from The Last of Us. Given HBO's previous success with the likes of The SopranosBoardwalk EmpireBig Little Lies, and Game of Thrones, here's hoping The Last of Us lives up to its potential and gets the multi-season order it deserves.
