HBO has taken a golf club to our hopes of seeing The Last of Us in 2022. With the eyes of the world firmly on how well Naughty Dog's acclaimed video game series can be brought into live-action, has the network just made itself more hated than Abby Anderson? Yes, yes it has.

Video game adaptations are a dime a dozen these days, with the Tom Holland-led Uncharted, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and Paramount's upcoming Halo series all trying to break that video game movie/series curse. Still, with HBO being the home for Game of Thrones and The Sopranos, The Last of Us TV series is poised to decimate its rivals.

Will We See The Last Of Us In 2022?

Although most had accepted we'd be seeing The Last of Us in 2022, HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told Deadline: "It's not going to air in 2022 — they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in '23."

This is a major kick for fans who've been eagerly watching the show’s progress. Despite a first look at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie looking like it was pulled directly from Naughty Dog's 2013 chart-topper, we’ve seen little else in terms of official material. Instead, we've been left on the sidelines - trawling the internet for sneaky set videos and snaps that fans have snapped in Canada.

Hyping The Last of Us' eventual release and the work of Craig Mazin as showrunner, Bloys told the site: "I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited. Craig did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in '22."

What Else Do We Know About The Last Of Us?

From what little we’ve seen, Mazin and co. will be sticking close to the events of the first game. We also know Parks and Rec's Nick Offerman has joined the cast as Bill, Euphoria’s Storm Reid is Ellie's love interest, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Diego Luna will play Tommy Miller. Best yet, Naughty Dog head honcho Neil Druckmann has directed his own episode (while also serving as an Executive Producer).

Even if we won't be tackling the mould-ravaged survivors of the apocalypse in 2022, The Last of Us might be better to rest for a while. There is a lot of pressure on the series to do well, and if we want a multi-season masterpiece instead of Game of Thrones Season 8, we say Mazin should take all the time he needs. Still, we'd at least like some sort of trailer.
