Street Fighter Pro Blames Connection Issues Following Capcom Cup Qualifier Elimination
There was drama at the North America West 1 Capcom Cup qualifying tournament as Street Fighter pro Victor "Punk" Woodley was knocked out of the competition amidst claims of poor connection. Punk is widely considered one of the best North American Street Fighter players and was expected to go far in the competition.
Even though the official competition stream didn't record any connection issues, an outraged Punk took his rage out on Capcom's netcode and online system. The visibly angry player picked up his gamepad and threw it on the floor in a clear temper.
Punk was bested by Alex Myer, leading to an angry defence. "Bro, they not gonna give him the win, there's no way. Bro, they gotta replay", he said. We was then kicking off in the tournament's Discord as he fumed, "My man lagged versus Mario, Snake Eyez, he lagged all day. So that's it, they're not gonna say anything!?".
The debate spilled over to Twitter when Punk told Myers to "stfu" after he posted an emotional Twitter about his win. Myers clapped back saying, "I know it's online, but when I got tendonitis in late 2017, I thought my career was over. I went through pure hell, physically... and then mentally ridiculed by my peers as I continued to try and travel.. 'Myers confirms'... 'why is he here?'... This is why I'm f**king here".
Others pointed to Myers' own complaints about losing to Darryll "Snake Eyez" Lewis in the pools and the irony of the situation. There is still a chance Punk could claw his way back into the competition. If he's lucky in the final North America West Qualifier, he could join the other eight players who've already secured a spot.
The issue of online gaming from remote locations has become a necessity due to COVID-19, but also a point of contention when it comes to fairness. Punk is one of many pro players who has had a strop with complaints about unfair lag on their end. It was up to the Capcom Cup to decide whether anything untoward happened, and the powers that be have handed Myers the win.
