Spyro The Dragon 4 Game Is ‘In The Works’
First Crash Bandicoot 5, now Spyro the Dragon 4. It looks like American video game developer Toys for Bob will have it plate full resurrecting beloved '90s PlayStation franchises for a whole new generation. Back in the day, Spyro the Dragon was the adorable little fire-breather that stole our hearts and many hours of our lives as we chugged through his games. Now, he could be coming back with an official fourth main series game.
In 1998, the OG Spyro the Dragon launched on the PlayStation and quickly became a staple of the console. While many thought of Crash Bandicoot as Sony's very own Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro made waves and carved himself an impressive legacy. Although the original trilogy came to an end with Spyro: Year of the Dragon in 2000, the name has lived on through a complicated timeline of reboot trilogies, crossovers into Skylanders, and cancelled games.
Toys for Bob took the reins for the acclaimed Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018 and brought the once-forgotten name back to life. With Reignited being a certified hit, it sounds like the developer is going full Crash and working on a fourth Spyro.
Spyro the Dragon 4: What's the news?
Aside from Reignited, there hasn't been a "new" Spyro game since 2011's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. Just like Toys for Bob released an art book for Reignited, the developer has done the same for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. As well as highlighting how the wild and wacky world of this Crash reinvention was crafted, @SpyroUniverse has pointed out an interesting mention of Spyro.
One page talks about Crash’s trip Dingo’s Diner, including a passage about "the city down below" and a "little hint at Spyro.” If you stare hard enough, you can see Spyro himself lurking in the background. Instead of this just being a well-placed Easter egg, the quote about it being a "hint" comes directly from Crash 4 concept artist Brun Croes - suggesting there's more to it.
Spyro the Dragon 4: Is it really on the way?
It all looks promising, but are we just nostalgic gamers grasping at straws in the hopes of another Spyro. In the '90s, PlayStation owners were largely divided into two camps depending on whether they were Crash or Spyro fans. Unfortunately, while that blundering bandicoot stood the test of time, this daring dragon largely slipped into the history books. Going in favour of the idea of Spyro 4 is the fact Crash 4 did so well. By taking the series in a bold new direction and delivering an official sequel to Crash 3: Warped, Toys for Bob delivered a faithful sequel that cashed in on fans old and new.
We should probably remember that it's all speculation for now and there's been no official word from either Activision or Toys for Bob. Still, it's easy to imagine the developer tackling a project like Spyro 4 following the success of Crash 4. It's a logical move to reinvent Spyro after Crash, but let's also remember there was seemingly a tease of Crash 5 hiding in the very first level of Crash 4 after you'd hit 106% completion. Then again, maybe the Crash 5 tease is actually a crossover with Spyro. Ultimately, Toys for Bob is likely onto a winner with both. Here's hoping we'll get to see Spyro spread his wings before too long.
