Believe it or not, the PlayStation 5 has been out for nearly three years now. Albeit they've only appeared on shelves for about 12 months of that entire time, Sony's new-generation console is approaching its third birthday.

While this might not mean much to the normal PlayStation fan, those long-time Sony advocates will remember that this is a significant period of time for the console giants.

Why? Well, this is the same time in the last-generation cycle when Sony announced the PlayStation 4 Pro, and eyes are already fixating on the developers to see whether history will repeat itself. With eager anticipation lingering, Sony has now stoked the fire, hinting at a PS5 Pro release as early as next year.

Ahead of the new year, PlayStation Senior Vice President, Hideaki Nishino, has just dropped a huge hint about the future of their consoles. Speaking in an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, primarily based on the PSVR2, Nishino slipped in something quite exciting about the PS5 Pro.

When asked about the possibility of the PS5 Pro coming into development, Nishino didn't exactly say yes, but he did give us a time frame.

"By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a very important time for the platform as well. I hope you will look forward to next year (2023)," Nishino said.

What To Expect From PlayStation In 2023

The PlayStation 5 Pro is likely to already be under development and has been for some time. Insider Gaming reported that the console will come with a detachable disc drive, the first major console to come without a way to enter discs, focusing solely on online games markets.

This isn't the end of the normal PS5 though, and after a staggered release of the consoles, it's expected that another 30 million will be distributed in 2023.

The PSVR2 is also landing in February 2023, taking advantage of the PS5 specs for higher-resolution gameplay, making it quite an important year for Sony. Will the PS5 Pro emerge from the shadows to give Xbox another battering? Watch this space.
