It's a twist that no one saw coming - not even the future-seeing Jötnar giants from God of War. As the Game Awards announces its nominations and Elden Ring dukes it out with God of War Ragnarok for Game of the Year, there's a surprise underdog that's coming up on the outside.

Yep, apparently, Sonic Frontiers is pretty good. At the start of 2022, Elden Ring made waves as the latest FromSoftware game to swing its sword at the Souls-like genre.

Forget Bloodborne or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, some hold Elden Ring as the best the studio has ever delivered - with others championing it as one of the best games of all time. So, can a janky Sonic game really topple it? Apparently so.

How Is Sonic Frontiers Beating Elden Ring?

Once again igniting the fires over review aggregator sites, Metacritic currently lists Sonic Frontiers with a healthy 8.4/10 based on 371 reviews. In comparison, Elden Ring is "just" 6.9.

It's true that Elden Ring's 6.9 is based on a whopping 4714 reviews. Also, Sonic is only just running out of the gate so will likely dip a bit when more people play. If you want to get technical, the Steam reviews also list Sonic Frontiers as "Overwhelmingly Positive" compared to Elden Ring's "Very Positive."

When Sonic Frontiers came out, it was one of the wildest review scores we've ever seen. Digital Trends gave it 1/5, while IGN scored it 7/10, and Shacknews gave it 9/10. We guess everyone is entitled to a different opinion.

Is Sonic Frontiers Really Better Than Elden Ring?

The problem is, you watch or read any review of Frontiers and there are numerous complaints. Namely, the issue of pop-in is a major drawback. It's so bad, Eurogamer's John Linneman said it's "some of the worst pop-in I've personally witnessed in a modern game."

Sonic Frontiers hardly seems like it has GOTY credentials, does it? Angry gamers are taking their views online, with YouTuber videogamedunkey leading the charge.

Dunkey delivered a scathing review of Frontiers and called out its Metacritic score matching the likes of Elden Ring, and Red Dead Redemption 2. The game is now being review-bombed by legitimate critics and those trying to make Dunkey look bad.

Love it or loathe it, there are sure to be those who think Sonic Frontiers is their Game of the Year. We say, let people have their opinions, isn't that what an unbiased industry should be like anyway?
