That barrel-bashing brute is back for more, with reports a Donkey Kong spin-off is apparently being planned by Illumination Entertainment. In case you haven't heard, Chris Pratt is slowly putting all other voice actors out of business by voicing Mario in an animated movie of the same name. Apparently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn't the only MCU on the horizon, thanks to the Mario Cinematic Universe.

The portly plumber has largely been absent from our screens since 1993's underrated Super Mario Bros. movie earned the honour of being Bob Hoskins' most-hated project. Following the success of movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, Nintendo and Illumination are taking a gamble of exploring the Mushroom Kingdom once again.

What's The News On The Donkey Kong Spin-Off?

Illumination isn't putting all its eggs in one basket, but still, surely it's early days to announce a Donkey Kong movie? In the untitled Mario film, resident funny man Seth Rogen is voicing DK. He's also joined by Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, so directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic were already doing some world-building in terms of a jungle spin-off.

News of the Donkey Kong spin-off comes from Giant Freaking Robot. The site claims Armisen will reprise his role as Cranky, while other characters being thrown around include Diddy Kong, Chunky Kong, Candy Kong, Funky Kong, and Dixie Kong.

Instead of including too many of the cast and characters appearing in the Mario movie, it's suggested the Donkey Kong spin-off will branch out on its own. Still, we're betting there's at least a cameo from Pratt's overall-wearing Goomba stomper.

What Else Do We Know About A Seth Rogen Donkey Kong Spin-Off?

There are no further details on the proposed Donkey Kong spin-off, but either way, don't expect it to come out soon. The Mario movie is tipped for a December 2022 release, so we'd guess Donkey Kong would be at least 2023 or beyond.

Donkey Kong first stomped his way into our lives in 1981 as the antagonist of Donkey Kong. Nintendo later retconned this to reveal the OG Donkey Kong is actually Cranky - making him the grandfather of the DK we know and love to this day. Over the years, the character has become a staple of crossover games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros., but has also held plenty of his own titles.

Timing couldn't be better for a Donkey Kong spin-off, especially considering Universal Studios is already building its own Super Nintendo World expansion based on the grouchy gorilla. Sadly, those rumours of a new Donkey Kong game haven't come to fruition. Hopefully, a potential movie spin-off will finally give King Kong the new-gen revival he deserves.
