Sonic the Hedgehog has had a chaotic and turbulent career as a video game mascot/SEGA headliner, and last year was no different.

After Sonic Mania indicated a return to 2D Sonic games would be on the cards in 2017, SEGA (for some reason) doubled down on the hit-or-miss-but-mostly-miss 3D approach when 2022 turned out Sonic Frontiers.

The dedicated superfans seemed to love the title, but for everyone else, Sonic Frontiers was clunky, bland, and empty. Worst of all, its biggest critics said it simply wasn't fun to play. But that won't slow SEGA down.

Sonic Frontiers Director Is Planning His Next Game

It looks as though there's still plenty to look forward to from the blue blur, as the director of Sonic Frontiers has pretty much confirmed that SEGA is working on the next game in the Sonic series.

Responding to one Twitter user asking about the potential of some classic Sonic zones returning to the future of the series, director Morio Kishimoto explained the limitations that kept classic zones from joining Sonic Frontiers.

The repetition of classic maps is something that fans have picked up on in the past, but apparently, Kishimoto has a plan. He's been on something of a spree of responding to fan questions on Twitter and has given us an insight into what's to come.

Morio Kishimoto Reveals Plans For Next Sonic Game

Kishimoto's tweets have been aggregated by Tails Channel, and they include some pretty fascinating tidbits about what we can expect from the future of 3D Sonic.

It looks as though the next 3D Sonic game will feature multiple playable characters, will avoid reusing locales from existing games, and as a result of the handling of the story in Frontiers, the next entry will have a much stronger dedication to story and script.

Importantly, the main focus is to provide a solid single-player experience.  Whatever is next for Sonic, we know to expect more 3D adventures - and whether that's a good thing is entirely up to you. As long as the soundtrack slaps like the Frontiers' did, we'll be happy to grab our running shoes.
