Sony is getting "schwifty", as Season 5 of Rick and Morty has snuck in a clever PlayStation 5 Easter egg. While Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's madcap comedy is known for its bizarre nods to the likes of the McDonald's Szechuan dipping sauce, a homage to Sony's next-gen console is a new one.

It was once the case that we had to wait years for Rick and Morty episodes, but with the dynamic duo of Harmon and Roiland firing on all cylinders, we've been treated to a plethora of episodes recently. Season 5 has already delivered a parody of Captain Planet, introduced Rick's sensual nemesis with Mr. Nimbus, and some Hellraiser-inspired Cenobites.

With so much going on, you might've missed the Rick and Morty PlayStation 5 Easter egg hiding in plain sight.

What is the Rick and Morty PlayStation 5 Easter egg?

In July 25's "Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular", Rick and Morty went with the bizarre decision to host its own turkey-packed Thanksgiving special. There was the welcome return of Keith David as President Curtis, with Rick and his former nemesis trying to take on an army of super soldier turkeys.

One scene involved the POTUS being dealt a near-fatal blow and his life flashing before his eyes. As President Curtis took what could be his final breaths, his mind whipped through history of the Berlin Wall coming down (1989), the introduction of the OG PlayStation (1995), Shakespeare in Love winning the Oscar for Best Picture (1997), Hurricane Katrina (2005), the PlayStation 3 (2006), and the arrival of the PlayStation 4 (2013).

The montage ended with Curtis saying, "I want a PlayStation 5", which is a not-so-subtle jab at the PS5's questionable stock levels. It turns out that President Curtis hasn't been one of those lucky few to get his hands on the PlayStation 5 since it was first released in November.

What's going on with PS5 stock levels?

Obviously, the Rick and Morty PlayStation 5 Easter egg is more than a throwaway gag. It's no secret that Sony has struggled to keep up with demand for the PS5. Although we're still a far way off the record-breaking success of the PS2's 155 million units sold, the PS5 has still shifted an impressive nine million consoles since launch.

In early June, Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the PS5 was sold out around the world, however, things seem to be back on track. Part of the problem has been coronavirus causing delays in production lines and Sony getting its hands on the all-important components needed to make the PS5.

Sony has been tinkering away on a redesigned PS5 that will apparently be easier to make, but that hasn't stopped "sold out" signs being seen everywhere. Rick and Morty has always been known for poking fun at our lives with clever pop culture references, and while the PlayStation 5 Easter egg is only a small one, it's given PS5 owners a sly smile for those unlucky fans still hunting for one. Maybe President Curtis from Dimension C-137 has one?
