Leaker Offers Update On Two New Silent Hill Games
While it looked like the burning fires beneath Silent Hill have long since smoldered to an ember, Konami's horror powerhouse is apparently set to rise from the ashes once more with not one, but two, planned games. A resurgence in the survival horror market means the genre is crowded with critically acclaimed titles like The Last of Us, Alien Isolation, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Dead Space, and (of course) the ongoing Resident Evil franchise. However, back in the day, few titles struck fear into our hearts quite like the Silent Hill games did.
The problem was, Silent Hill was caught in the crossfire of Hideo Kojima's departure from Konami, which led to the formation of Kojima Productions (responsible for Death Stranding) and the planned Silent Hills being scrapped. We all remember the terrifying P.T. (playable teaser) that gave a taste of Silent Hills, but now, the short demo is the stuff of legends in the video game world. Since the game was unceremoniously axed in 2015, there's been much debate about where the rights to the franchise lie and where it could go next. Do we finally have some concrete evidence?
What are the new Silent Hill games?
Not long ago, @AestheticGamer1 first sparked rumours that Silent Hill would be coming to the PlayStation 5 with a game developed by Sony. All sides have shied away from the idea of a new entry, but now, the insider is back to stoke the fire. Although AestheticGamer is "not 100% " on what's going on, they've provided an update on a SIlent Hill game that could apparently release on multiple platforms. Following in the footsteps of God of War potentially leaving the Sony nest, is a next-gen Silent Hill poised to do the same?
In December, AestheticGamer (under the name Dusk Golem) took to ResetEra and wrote, "In mid-2020, a good acquaintance of mine knew I was talking about the Silent Hill rumors. They didn't tell me anything specifically, but they are working with Konami on something entirely unrelated to all of this. They just gave me a nudge to let me know they were 'mighty positive' something Silent Hill was in the works currently, wouldn't tell me any more than that (and that's fair, they have a personal leg in the race), but were fine joining the list of people who know and can corroborate it for me".
The updated information claims there could be two teams working on two different Silent Hill games. One would be a PS5-exclusive, which makes a lot of sense. The other is more mysterious, but remember rumours that Konami was shipping the idea of two Silent Hill games back in 2018, with one being a soft reboot. Similar to what Sony did with Demon's Souls, could we see a next-gen remastering of the OG Silent Hill? The first game released in 1999 on the PlayStation, and although there was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on Wii, PS2, and PSP, the game was a reimagining rather than a straight-up remaster.
Will we see new Silent Hill games?
Of course, Sony is no stranger to sharing the Silent Hill name, with Nintendo and Microsoft sometimes getting in on the action. Even though there was SIlent Hill HD Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, most agree the early games are failing to live up to their full potential as we enter a new generation of games. Whichever studios are working on whichever game, and in whatever form, SIlent Hill could be a serious hit for whoever manages to wrangle the rights for next-gen. It's important to remember that even AestheticGamer isn't completely sure about one of the projects, so all of the above should be taken with a big grain of salt.
Only recently, an interview where Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka said his next project is “the one you're hoping to hear about" was taken down. Instead of this sparking speculation we're on the money with a franchise resurrection, Konami has continued to distance itself from the idea. The latest update saw the developer tell VGC it did not ask for the interview to be removed from YouTube. Still, Konami repeatedly denies it will return to this tortured town any time soon. Although it all means we're a long way from any official news on where the series goes next, the hype is almost palpable. Here's hoping Silent Hill doesn't stay "silent" for much longer.
