Netflix Reveals The First Games They’ll Make Available To Users
It was recently reported that Netflix was about ready to jump into the world of video games, to the shock of pretty much everyone, especially after it was suggested that PlayStation games could come to Netflix too. The entertainment conglomerate has dominion over all things film and TV, so why shouldn’t video games be next on their list of things to conquer?
Netflix has announced their initial plans for their entry into gaming, and it’s a promising start for the company.
Netflix Confirms Mobile Gaming Coming To Subscribers
Click to enlargeIn a letter to investors, a Netflix representative suggested that they’re making moves on the expansion into games, and are viewing the new addition to their roster as an extension of their previous work.
“We view gaming as another content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV”, says the letter. “Games will be included in members’ Netflix subscription at no additional cost, similar to films and series.
“Initially, we’ll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices.”, it goes on to say. “We’re excited as ever about our movies and TV series offering, and we expect a long runway of increasing investment and growth across all of our existing content categories, but since we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.”
We’re not sure when these games will come about - but it might not be long given Netflix’s past working in interactive media.
This Isn’t Netflix’s First Foray Into Gaming
Click to enlargeInterestingly, they’ve already dipped their toes into the world of interactive entertainment. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was a staple of the interactive capabilities of Netflix’s UI, allowing viewers to make their own choices about the direction the story of the special could take.
But that wasn’t where it started - Minecraft Story Mode was the first to take the step, with Telltale Games’ interactive story taking the lead by way of your TV remote. It was a bold step, and one that paid off very nicely for Netflix. And now they’re getting ready to take on gaming even more, confirming their plans to bring full-on gaming to subscribers.
The world of gaming is about to get a little busier thanks to Netflix’s plans, and hopefully, it’ll bring about some exciting new games for us to get our hands on.
