Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 have officially been announced, with both said to be launching in 2022. The two titles promise to be a new age for the Call of Duty franchise, which has been stagnating across both Warzone and Vanguard.

Both continue to be riddled with bugs and glitches. What's more, Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are both being developed with brand-new engines that will supposedly be built from the "ground-up".

In a normal year, we wouldn't be hearing anything official about the next Call of Duty until the summer at least. However, it seems that the announcement comes as an admission of failure on part of Activision. Developers have continually struggled to fix the ongoing issues in Warzone, rendering the game unplayable for some. The Call of Duty community see the franchise's current state as an all-time low, and this early reveal is clearly a way to ease the fans.

The official Call of Duty blog post certainly seems like the right way to go about it, as it officially revealed that the sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare was slated for release in 2022, along with a brand-new Warzone experience. As mentioned, both titles will replace the current engine which has been used since 2019, and will be built from the ground-up. The new Warzone experience was mentioned to be a "massive evolution of Battle Royale with all-new playspace and a new sandbox mode".

This announcement will certainly please fans, who have been enduring the dreaded state of Warzone since the faulty launch of Caldera in December 2021. And the icing on the cake for many is that fan-favourite Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward are at the helm of both experiences. The statement arrived alongside the patch notes for the upcoming Warzone season 2, which arrives on February 14.

At the moment we don't have a solid release date for either, but if the blog post is anything to go by we should see both titles before the end of 2022. Modern Warfare 2 was rumoured to be launching slightly earlier than its usual November window after the sales disappointment of Vanguard.

Hopefully this can be the dawn of a new age for Call of Duty which has been in a rapidly declining state. For more news on Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 be sure to check back here at GGRecon.
