Mass Effect TV Series Apparently On The Way To Amazon
While the world of live-action video game adaptations was once remembered for abysmal Mortal Kombat movies or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson chewing the scenery for DOOM, we're thankfully in a renaissance for the genre. The latest rumours claim a Mass Effect TV series could be on the way.
The Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil movies are a distant memory, as everything from The Witcher to The Last of Us are making the leap to the small screen. Big screen outings like Uncharted and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City continue to be a big risk in terms of budget, while it looks like our love of streaming services could be the best way to bring your favourite video games to life.
Mass Effect TV Series: What Do We Know?
According to Deadline, Amazon is nearing a deal for a Mass Effect TV series. Things have apparently been spurred on by the success of Amazon's The Wheel of Time series, however, remember that the streaming giant hasn't finalised an agreement with EA.
It's unclear whether this would be a Mass Effect origin story or stick closely to the plot of the games, but either way, there's plenty of lore to explore. Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Slake explained, "You will see us continuing to invest in fantasy genre of all kinds, we have a genre-focused team on the ground in Studios who work tirelessly with our creative partners on those slates, and you can look forward to more."
Amazon has a lot on its plate right now, and away from the epic Lord of the Rings series, there's more in the realm of video games thanks to a previously announced Fallout series. HBO Max is currently working away on The Last of Us with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, but with Mass Effect and Fallout, Amazon could dwarf its rivals in this ever-growing genre.
Mass Effect TV Series: Have We Been Here Before?
Since its inception in 2007, the four main Mass Effect games have become a legend within their own right. A fifth game is officially on the way, so it only makes sense that BioWare wants to cash in on the IP. Those who've stuck with Shep since the early days will know a Mass Effect movie was once on the cards.
Back in 2010, EA announced that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. were working on a movie, with a screenplay from I Am Legend's Mark Protosevich. We recently covered why the Mass Effect movie never made it past the planning stages, so here's hoping it's second time lucky for the idea.
The big question is, will a Mass Effect TV series follow in the footsteps of Paramount's macho-led Halo series or will we get to see the fan-favourite FemShep in action? As the potential of a Mass Effect series get the cogs turning, we're sure to get a typically A-list ensemble when/if Amazon signs on the dotted line.
