Marvel's Avengers Update Includes A Game-Breaking Glitch

The Avengers have been disassembled - well, at least in the world of Crystal Dynamics' Marvel's Avengers. While things had started looking better for Marvel's Avengers, the all-star superhero spectacular has been struck by a game-breaking glitch that's making the game completely unplayable. For the time being, you can't Hulk Smash, spin Mjolnir, or take flight as Iron Man.

Marvel's Avengers was first launched in September 2020 and was supposed to cash in on the success of games like Rocksteady's Arkham series and Insomniac's Spider-Man. Sadly, the title struggled to live up to its own hype and was slammed for repetition in both the main storyline and the multiplayer. Despite this, Square Enix has continued to deliver DLC content as part of a booming roadmap. Unfortunately, the latest update has stopped Marvel's Avengers in its tracks.

What is the game-breaking Marvel's Avengers glitch?

The Patch 1.5.1a was released on April 7 and was supposed to fix a few stability issues. There was nothing too major here, which makes it even more confusing about what the problem actually is. The game's official subreddit was flooded with complaints that the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions won't start at all. On Wednesday, someone wrote: "On PS4. Can’t play it at all, keeps crashing". Someone else added, "Same. Constant CE-34878-0 on PS4 after selecting Avengers Initiative".

Even though it's unclear what's causing this game-breaking Marvel's Avengers glitch, it definitely looks like it's linked to the patch update. Some speculate it could be linked to the game becoming part of PlayStation Now, however, this is an unsubstantiated claim. Apparently, reaching certain parts of Marvel's Avengers causes the whole game to crash, while others have said trying to load a save file causes a crash back to the title screen. Either way, a potentially massive fanbase is missing out on the fun of the game so soon after it arrived on PS Now.

When will Marvel's Avengers fix its game-breaking glitch?

At the time of writing, the game's official account said it's aware of the problem on PS4 and is "investigating". This wasn't enough for an already disgruntled fanbase, which soon turned on the dev team. One outraged fan wrote, "One more screw up and I will make it my life’s goal to make sure your market place suffers a severe financial drought. There is clearly ZERO testing, ZERO accountability and ALL of the excuses. Slowly but surely, hardcore supporters are throwing their hands up in frustration". Another grumbled, "Just an update. Outriders is currently working great on PS4 and has a much more competent team of devs and a transparent social media manager".

Almost two days after the problem was first reported, there seems to be no update about what's going on. Outraged players continue to lose their patience, while Marvel's Avengers shapes up to be the new Cyberpunk 2077. Just like CD Projekt Red, the Avengers devs are being dragged over the coals and are accused of not working quick enough.

Although the release of the March 18 Operation Hawkeye: Future Imperfect DLC was supposed to usher in a new era of the game with the introduction of Clint Barton, others argue it's not enough to escape the fact the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions were delayed. At a time Marvel's Avengers could do with all the positive press it can get, a game-breaking glitch is an unwelcome surprise.
