Hogwarts Legacy Players Want WB To Cancel Last-Gen Versions
Is Hogwarts Legacy actually ever going to come out? With yet another day for Avalanche Software's open-world Harry Potter game, it looks less and less likely.
When the first footage of what would become Hogwarts Legacy leaked back in 2018, it was a simpler time when delays for Cyberpunk 2077 and J.K. Rowling's transgender controversy were dots on the horizon. Sadly, Hogwarts Legacy can't seem to find a date and stick to it.
What's Up With The Last-Gen Versions Of Hogwarts Legacy?
At this point, we've given up on counting how many times Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed from its original release date of 2021. Although not all versions have been shifted from their February 10 release, it's not a good look.
The official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter confirms the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will now release on April 4. It's even worse news for Nintendo Switch players, as they'll have to wait until July 25 to start their Potions classes.
As you can imagine, the news didn't go down well among wizards and muggles alike. With this being the latest in a string of delays, many called for Avalanche Software to simply scrap Hogwarts Legacy's last-gen versions.
Responding to the tweet, one critic wrote, "Last gen consoles are 9 years old. 2023 should be the point where we see many titles moving to current gen only. Last gen consoles are holding current gen back."
Another added, "Just cancel the last gen versions, we need more current gen exclusive games," while a third said, "Old gens getting delayed this is NOT a good sign. I feel like this will be another Cyberpunk old gen situation and it worries me."
Will Hogwarts Legacy Cancel Its Last-Gen Versions?
You might remember when Cyberpunk 2077 (eventually) launched, and last-gen consoles struggled to run it. Simply, CD Projekt Red's sci-fi shooter was too advanced. It's presumably this that's holding the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy behind so much. Nintendo's console is hardly known for its punching power.
Across the board, the industry is divided on when it's time to leave last-gen behind. Despite Gotham Knights ditching its last-gen versions, there were questions about why it was still locked at 30 FPS.
The problem is, we're still stuck in that weird limbo where not everyone can afford or get their hands on new-gen consoles. Although Sony has promised to keep making PS4 games for a little longer, not everyone is convinced this is the best way forward.
This late in the game, it's doubtful Avalanche will cancel the last-gen versions of Hogwarts Legacy, but by the looks of it, there's a mad scramble to get them running without looking like they're on a potato.
