Much like Thanos himself, the idea of GTA 6 was “inevitable”. It’s been nine years and counting since GTA V raced onto the scene, but as the most profitable entertainment product of all time, it’s left behind quite the legacy. So, what’s next for Grand Theft Auto?

It was a strange turn of events, and instead of making some sort of superstar reveal showcase with scantily-clad women and fighter jets that would be on-brand for Rockstar Games. The gaming giant confirmed GTA 6 in a single sentence at the bottom of a press release, still, this throwaway remark already has the next game in the series breaking records.

How Is GTA 6 Already Breaking Records?

Shortly after everyone noticed Rockstar had quietly announced GTA 6, the official Twitter announced it. Considering we’ve been lost in a sea of rumours and whispers for years, Rockstar’s official announcement tweet has been racking up the likes.

At the time of writing, the GTA 6 tweet has been liked 579.2k times. It’s a truly whopping number of likes, which has overtaken some serious movie competition. When Disney revealed the Avengers: Endgame trailer, it was liked over 525k times. Importantly, the GTA 6 announcement is galloping toward the Avengers: Infinity War trailer - which was liked 597k times.

The number of likes is going up by the hour, so we soon expect GTA 6 to overtake Infinity War too. Still, the viral tweet is a long way off being the most-liked ever. That goes to Chadwick Boseman’s Twitter when his family shared the tragic news of his passing in December 2020. It garnered 7.2 million likes, while second place goes to Barack Obama getting 4.1 million liked when he tweeted “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…” in 2017.

Will GTA 6 Be The Biggest Game Of All Time?

Interestingly, this isn’t the only time GTA  and Avengers: Endgame have been used in the same sentence. 2019’s Infinity War sequel soared up the charts and was the highest-grossing movie of all time until the rerelease of James Cameron’s Avatar reclaimed its crown. Still, both of these are dwarfed by GTA V being the most profitable entertainment product of all time - meaning it’s earned more than any movie, series, book, or song ever created.

With this, there comes the obvious pressures for GTA 6 to perform. Although Rockstar confirms the game is “well underway”, we’re still expecting it will probably be 2024/2025 before we’ll be sitting down for GTA 6. Having over a decade of hype means there’s always a danger GTA 6 will crumble under the weight of its own. Whether the next game can overtake its predecessor as the most profitable entertainment product of all time remains to be seen, but we’re guessing there’s gold in them thar hills of San Andreas.
