Even though Epic Games is celebrating all things Gears of War with its own crossover, The Coalition's main franchise is stuck in the depths of development hell. As the developer struggles to get the gears turning, there's bad news for those hoping to get a Gears of War 6 update.

First hitting the scene in 2006, Gears of War has become a Microsoft staple and charted the war between the tattered remnants of humanity and the underground reptilian race known as the Locust Horde. Away from the main trilogy, we've had spin-offs and a lauded return to form in 2019 with Gears 5, but what's coming next?

What's Going On With Gears Of War 6?

While we've moved on a lot from the early days of Marcus Fenix, Gears 5 was praised for the bold step of introducing Kait Diaz as the franchise's first female protagonist. Known Xbox leaker Rand al Thor 19 told XNC podcast that he's apparently heard off Windows Central's Jez Corden, and had the following to say:

"The Gears, they had released four and five three years apart. Right now we should be getting a Gear 6 next year, they should have revealed it at E3 Xbox has changed now their studios have time and you don't have to force The Coalition to basically pump out games because you have all these other studios also making games."

Alongside rumours The Coalition is working on a mystery project between Gears games, Rand al Thor 19 claims we won't be blasting Locust scum until at least 2024/2025 at the earliest. If this is the case, it would be at least a six-year wait between chapters. That might sound like a long time, but remember, we're still playing GTA V from 2013.

When Will We Know More About Gears Of War 6?

Rand al Thor 19 praised the move and said he "loves" that there's going to be more time to work on another Gears game - instead of releasing just for the sake of it. He went on to speculate what The Coalition could do next, with the interesting notion of Gears ditching its third-person perspective for first-person. Well, Resident Evil did it.

Rest assured though, there are plenty of Microsoft exclusives to keep you busy in the meantime. As well as Halo Infinite, there are upcoming releases for Redfall, FableStarfield, and (eventually) The Elder Scrolls 6. Does this put Gears 6 at a disadvantage though? Despite the franchise's legacy, it's up against some seriously big hitters in Xbox's future.

The Coalition is everywhere right now, and after helping 343 refine Halo Infinite, it also turned its hand to The Matrix Awakens' trippy tech demo for Epic Games. Even though Microsoft and The Coalition haven't made Gears of War 6 official yet, the fact Gears 5 had the biggest launch week of any Xbox Game Studios title this generation, it's a pretty good sign of things to come.

With the Coalition making a move into Unreal Engine 5, rest assured that whatever the next Gears tries out, the Locust Horde will be looking like a suitably new-gen title to bolster Xbox's first-party favourites.
