Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is finally here, and it's starting to become a little clearer why Rockstar were so tentative to show off the game before launch, as fans are baffled by how terrible it looks.

What Is Wrong With The GTA Remastered Trilogy?

Fans seem to have a few complaints so far about the quality of the remaster. Firstly, a Tweet thread went viral that collected a series of character comparison photos, that showed how the remaster had altered them. The results are equally horrifying and hilarious, with the remastered character models often looking worse than their original counterparts.

This Reddit thread shows off some of the worst...

The issues seem to stem from the cartoony look that the remaster has gone for. Many of the characters give off an uncanny valley vibe, others have really disparate proportions, while some just look really downright low quality and lazy. The Twitter thread in question can be found here, but be warned - look at your own peril!

Another sore spot for fans seems to be the decision to remove many of the original songs from the remaster. Licensing for official music in video games can cost a pretty penny, and eventually the licences run out, leading to songs being taken out.

We've seen this before, as San Andreas has had updates in the past few years that removed songs from the original digital editions.

Some of the songs that are no longer available include Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, N.W.A's Express Yourself, and Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine.

What Are The Fans Saying?

Many users across Twitter and Reddit are having a field day mocking the remasters because of their perceived low quality, while others are justifiably upset at Rockstar. One user pointed out that the characters look straight out of early pre-rendered CGI cutscenes, and many genuinely think that the originals look much better.

Players have also pointed out that the lack of fog and increased draw distance has become a detriment to the experience, as it no longer hides how small the maps are or shrouds the poor quality textures from a distance.

Some also seem to be unclear on the difference between a remaster and a remake, with many complaining that they envisioned it ended up similar to the recent Mafia remakes. Regardless, it seems that the GTA Trilogy could have done with a little longer in the oven before releasing.

If the character models and graphics don't put you off, it's currently available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and select PC platforms.
