All good things must come to an end, and when it comes to the last generation of video games console, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are being sent to the knacker's yard at an alarming pace. Although we'll still get a last-gen release for Hogwarts Legacy, developers across the board are giving older tech the boot. It's a little different with Capcom's next Resident Evil remake, but as usual, some of you aren't happy.

When Resident Evil 4 was announced at June's PlayStation State of Play, it wasn't exactly a surprise. Following in the footsteps of 2019 and 2020's Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remakes, it was always expected - even if the massive Capcom data breach hadn't confirmed it. Crawling its way back onto consoles in 2023 means we don't have long to wait, however, others will be waiting a lot longer... forever, actually.

Will Resident Evil 4 Launch On Last-Gen Consoles?

While we always knew Resident Evil 4 would be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, Tokyo Game Show gave the surprise reveal that it'll also land on PlayStation 4 next year. In a time where the likes of Gotham Knights have seen their last-gen releases get the axe, it's refreshing that PS4 owners aren't being locked out in the cold.

If you're questioning why Sony Ponies are being given a leg up, Capcom hasn't officially passed comment. Then again, it's important to remember PlayStation is a Japanese company and therefore has a massive fan base in the country - where Capcom is based. Although Xbox is more popular than PlayStation in the USA, it's always struggled in the East.

More than just Xbox owners being peeved, others slammed the idea of a last-gen remake in general. Remember when Cyberpunk 2077 came out and ran great on PC but looked like it was being played on a potato on older consoles. Posting on Twitter, one critic moned, "This is a terrible idea and a fail by the devs….quit worrying about the older gen consoles …if it can run on PS4/One that means it’s not using all the power of PS5/X." Another fumed, "Running a 2023 game on a 2013 hardware...ok," while a third simply said, "Just making a PS4 version is wrong to me."

Will Sony Buy Capcom?

PlayStation has something of a tie to the Resiverse because 1996's OG debuted here. Still, the '00s saw a bizarre trend of Nintendo exclusivity with Resident Evil Zero and the REmake launching on GameCube. In fact, RE4 first arrived on the GameCube before being ported to every system under the Sun.  These days, it looks like Sony is Capcom's preferred publisher of choice.

Remember, the first Castle Dimitrescu demo of Village arrived on PlayStation, while the latest remake was announced at a Sony showcase. There were wild rumours that Sony could buy Capcom or Konami to bolster its ranks against Microsoft's Activision Blizzard deal, but so far, nothing has come of it. Either way, we can't wait to hear Ashley Graham's whiny voice when the Resident Evil 4 remake launches on March 24.
