Cyberpunk 2077 Panned By Players Over 'Performance Issues'

CD Projekt Red is rolling out the neon carpet as Cyberpunk 2077 is finally available to play on console and PC. While the ambitious open-world shooter was originally supposed to launch in April this year, it was later pushed to September, November, and then again to December. Some doubted whether we'd ever be able to drop into Night City as the customisable mercenary called V, but thankfully, that day has come.

With the studio previously being known for its work on the Witcher games - and with 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being one of the best-selling games of all time - there's been a lot of hype surrounding the very different world of Cyberpunk 2077. It's clear a lot of work has gone into Cyberpunk 2077, but with accusations the team rushed release to hit its December 10 target and avoid another PR disaster, some have panned the supposedly next-gen game over performance issues.

Cyberpunk 2077 performance issues: What's the problem?

Ahead of the full release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players are getting a first taste of what Cyberpunk 2077 can do. Unfortunately, social media is full of moans and groans that the game isn't playing how it should. A scathing Reddit post from u/cellymdewitt is simply titled, "This game is unfinished and total disaster with graphics and texture applying". At the time of writing, it has 27.6K upvotes and is hardly a glowing review.

From dodgy textures to pixels clipping through each other, Cyberpunk 2077 sounds a little buggy as it comes fresh out the box. Importantly, most of the big reviews have come from PC players, which is how everyone is being advised to play. For those who own next-gen consoles, the best bet is to wait until next year when things will hopefully run a little smoother. Then again, being told to wait months to play the latest must-have title is hardly fair on loyal fans who've already waited eight years.

Cyberpunk 2077 Performance Issues: Will things get better?

If all of the above wasn't bad enough, Twitter user @Legolas has put the PS4 Fat version of Cyerpunk 2077 next to its promising gameplay demo from 2018. To say it's not a pretty sight would be an understatement. Responding to Legolas' clip, one critic howled, "Damm that's watchdogs levels of downgrade", while another griped, "There's no excuse for releasing the game in this state, but I'd urge people to be patient and wait for optimization patches...".

The PS4 footage was even compared to the iconic PS1 Hagrid meme that continues to do the rounds. However, others have reiterated the Cyberpunk 2077 has very much been designed as a next-gen game. One person wrote, "We had the same with GTA V at the end of the PS3 cycle. These high-end games that release on both old and new platforms really cause problems on the old generation of consoles, because they push that generation to (and beyond) the limits".

It's true that Cyberpunk 2077 currently finds itself in that bizarre middle ground of being caught between two generations, then again, others point to how good the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and Red Dead Redemption 2 looked. We'll have to see how developers respond to these Cyberpunk 2077 performance issues and whether the game will look as glossy as it originally promised when it hits next-gen consoles in 2021.
