It turns out NetherRealm Studios once toyed with raising the "stakes", with confirmation Buffy the Vampire Slayer could've joined the Mortal Kombat series. Since 1992, we've been kicking ass and saying "Finish Him" (or her).

While the likes of Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Scorpion have been with the franchise from the very start, later entries have introduced pop culture favourite via DLCs since 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC UniverseMK9 added the likes of Kratos, MKX Freddy Krueger, and MK11 RoboCop. There's been a massive lean toward male characters, so it's easy to imagine Buffy showing the men how it's done.

Why didn't Buffy the Vampire Slayer come to Mortal Kombat?

Ed Boon is known as the Mortal Kombat co-creator and current Creative Director of the series. Away from teasing Scooby-Doo's Shaggy as a DLC fighter, Boon has confirmed Buffy Summers could've popped up as a guest fighter. Posting on Twitter, Boon confirmed Ms. Summers' name "has come up many times (over the years)".

Even though Boon doesn't reveal how close we came to getting Buffy in-game, the Twitterverse exploded with love for the vampire-dusting hero. One outraged player simply wrote, "We shoulda had her and Ash in MK11 instead of Joker and Roboflop".

Others said, "We literally have never had a female guest plz do it", "I swear to god please give us this one thing. the slayer in this game would make me purchase it and play it forever", and "It’s what we all what, please, make her the first female guest for Mortal Kombat 13."

Someone rightly said we need a face-off between Buffy and Mortal Kombat's Nitara - the winged vampire that first appeared in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. See Ed, this stuff is practically made for the next MK

Will Buffy the Vampire Slayer appear in Mortal Kombat?

The fact that Boon has mentioned Buffy is far from confirmation she's on the way. There must be a reason she's been discussed so many times over the years, but never made the cut. Still, the conversation has highlighted the fact we haven't had a female guest fighter. We can't imagine this won't change with the release of the mythical Mortal Kombat 12

For now, it's the end of the road for Mortal Kombat 11, with no more DLCs planned. Even if Boon could surprise us, we're all looking ahead at the inevitable release of the next main entry. It's ironic that the guest fighters are arguably more hyped than the characters included in the base game.

Even though a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is on the way, we've got to agree with the masses, we NEED to see a video game version of Sarah Michelle Gellar in Mortal Kombat. Well, it's got to be better than 2000's Buffy the Vampire Slayer video game on the Game Boy.
