Ya'har mateys, Ubisoft is getting ready to set sail with a sequel to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The seafaring adventure was the best-selling game of 2013, and as of 2020, has shifted a whopping 15 million copies. With the sixth AC game plundering a tonne of gold, it makes sense that franchise overseers want to revisit the world of Edward Kenway. Before you start hoisting the mainsail and flying your skull and crossbones, there's a catch!

Some 14 years after Assassin's Creed first explored the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars, the name is still going strong thanks to the release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla last year. While the game bridged the gap between current and next-gen consoles, players are already demanding to know what's next for the series and where Ubisoft will take the story. Only recently, one of the writers said they want to explore Brazil, but in the meantime, we know the expanded lore will revisit those rum-swilling pirates.

What is the Assassin's Creed: Black Flag sequel?

In an interview with Eurogamer, Ubisoft Transmedia director Aymar Azaïzia confirmed a webtoon series will continue Kenway's story. When discussing fans' calls to bring the back to the fan-favourite Ezio, Azaïzia explained why they want to let the character rest. Instead, attention turned to Black Flag as he added, "We had a talk about Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and potential novels or DLCs we never used or tapped into where we could see Edward going somewhere else - maybe not staying in the same seas, maybe going East... 'That could be super interesting. We never told this story, what about pitching that?'"

As for what's next in the Kenway arc, Azaïzia continued, "We decided to go with Assassin's Creed 4 - we haven't written anything yet, we know exactly what we want to do but we're still in the process of creating. But that's exactly how it came to be - we explored different characters, different things we wanted to do in the franchise, and what would work in a specific format - animated pirates! amazing! - that opened specific doors".

When will we see the Assassin's Creed: Black Flag sequel?

The site pressed for more details about what to expect, but by the sounds of it, we're still a way off seeing Kenway back at the bow of his ship. When asked if it would pick up from the end of Black Flash - with Kenway setting sail for England - Azaïzia said, "It's probably going to be just after the game, I don't know exactly which year we'll do specifically as we'll do historical research to make sure we have some nice and interesting characters.

"It's after the main events of Assassin's Creed 4 so a lot characters are out the call from the get-go, and at a point where Edward is embracing the Creed. Because in the game, a lot of people forget Edward is not an Assassin but posing as one, helping them. And it's only at the end of the game he's like 'huh, maybe I could join'. It could be interesting to tap into that and see Edward as an Assassin".

Excitingly, the animated series is just one of eight Assassin's Creed projects being announced this year. Sadly, the Assassin's Creed: Black Flag sequel isn't the long-planned Skull & Bones. Ubisoft first announced a proper sequel in 2017, however, the project slipped into development hell and was later completely rebooted as a game under the same name. Hopefully, an animated Black Flag series will reinvigorate the game's armada of fans and see them take to the seven seas to champion a fully-fledged game series.
