Forget Kingdom HeartsSuper Smash Bros., or even League of LegendsDisney Melee Mania is here to bring together all of the above in the best way possible. If you want to blast Maleficent in the face with Elsa's icy blast, send Hades packing to the underworld as Dumbo, or tie up Ursula's tentacles as Buzz Lightyear - now you can.

There's no taking away LoL's multiplayer online battle arena crown, but we're guessing Disney Melee Mania is going to try it by cashing in on the genre with a nostalgic twist. Since 2009, the MOBA scene has largely been dominated by Riot Games' fantasy favourite, and while there have been plenty of pale imitations, Disney Melee Mania put a new spin on the tried and tested formula.

What Do We Know About Disney Melee Mania?

Apple has just announced Disney Melee Mania for the Apple Arcade. Coming in December, the title is from Mighty Bear Games and lets characters from the world of Disney and Pixar movies to duke it out. Players pick holographic heroes to take part in 3v3 matches against their rivals.

Hyping Disney Melee Mania, Might Bear Games CEO Simon Davis said, "We’re thrilled to work with Disney to bring these beloved characters to the first-ever Disney and Pixar battle arena game, available exclusively on Apple Arcade. Fans will compete with arcade-style Disney and Pixar champions in a fun and frenzied all-out brawl to survive the chaotic melee and stay in the spotlight."

There are apparently 12 champions to choose from at launch, with developers promising to add more on a regular basis. Each have their own "action-ready design", "iconic moves and unlockable cosmetics". Matches will last for five minutes, with a goal to score as many points as possible or defeat the opposing team. Multiple modes and challenges - as well as in-game rewards - promise to mix things up.

From what little we've seen so far, it appears the following heroes and villains are on the starting roster for Disney Melee Mania:

  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Bing Bong
  • Elsa
  • Frozone
  • Jasmine
  • Maleficent
  • Moana
  • Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey Mouse
  • Timon
  • Wreck It-Ralph

That means there are at least two more out there, so let's hope some more vile villains are on the way. Personally, we're just hoping those creepy coconut creatures from Moana aren't making an appearance.

Apple Arcade Senior Director Alex Rofman added, "Players will find endless gaming options on Apple Arcade to keep them entertained on all their favorite devices this holiday season, from classic titles like 'Crossy Road Castle' and 'Solitaire' to creative new games like ‘Disney Melee Mania’ and 'LEGO Star Wars: Castaways'. Best of all, Apple Arcade delivers a worry-free uninterrupted gaming service, allowing families to simply enjoy fun and exciting gameplay experiences, all with no ads or in-app purchases."

Disney Melee Mania will be part of the Apple Arcade subscription, which costs $5/£5 a month and includes hundreds of games. We'll have to see whether Disney Melee Mania has the chops to rival League of Legends or it's just a cheap cash grab.
