Nintendo has just announced a new 1.0.2 patch for the Generation 9 Pokemon games, Scarlet and Violet. The version 1.0.2 patch is planned for release in late February 2023, and promises to fix a number of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's… quirks (glitches), as well as nerf one of the competitive scene’s biggest threats.

This guide will walk you through all the changes that will be made, as well as how to install version 1.0.2 patch to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

To download Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s 1.0.2 update, you’ll need about 1GB of memory space on your Nintendo Switch system or microSD card.

The game’s online features will no longer work on the previous version, so make sure you get it sorted. If your Switch is set to Auto-Update, has enough free space, and is connected to the internet, version 1.0.2 will be downloaded automatically.

First, you’ll need to connect your Nintendo Switch console to the internet.

On the HOME screen, press the + or - Button on your controller when Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s icon is selected.

Next, you’ll need to select Software Update, followed by Via the Internet.

This will launch the update installer.

You can check which version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet you have installed on the title screen!

Pokemon Scarlet And Violet: Version 1.0.2 Patch Notes

It’s fair to say that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet weren’t without their issues at launch. Will the 1.2.0 update for the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games fix those bugs? Well… yes and no.

Here is everything mentioned in the patch notes for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s newest patch:

Feature Adjustments

Pokemon Boxes will have additional functionality, such as:

Changing a Pokemon’s nickname, marking, held item, titles, and move order will now be possible from the summary screen. You will also be able to have Pokemon remember/forget moves, and use TMs to learn new moves from the summary screen.

Players will be able to swap out held items by pressing the Y Button when in the Held Items view.

Players will be able to select All Boxes while moving Pokemon or items in the Party and Boxes view and Held Items view.

Talking of different views, boxed Pokemon that are assigned to a Battle Team will now have their icons displayed in a darker hue compared to those not in a Battle team to make it easier to differentiate.

Finally, the News screen will be displayed when you connect to the internet from the main menu, just as it is when connecting to the internet from the Poke Portal.

Tera Raid Bug Fixes

A big focus on big fixes in Version 1.0.2 has been on the infamous Tera Raid Battles.

The incredibly frustrating bug that prevents an opposing Tera Pokemon’s HP gauge from properly reflecting damage done by certain moves and status conditions will be fixed.

All Pokemon on your side will also no longer faint unceremoniously despite having HP in black crystal Tera Raid Battles.

A bug that temporarily prevents you from entering inputs if a Tera Pokemon takes certain actions while you’re picking a move will be fixed.

All players will now see the same Pokemon on their screen as the host when connecting to a Tera Raid Battle. On a similar note, you’ll now actually join the Tera Raid Battle against the Pokemon you picked.

The bug that prevented Tera Raid Battle crystals from appearing for a set amount of time under certain circumstances will be fixed.

Battles

Both in-game and online competitive battles have been subject to a number of glitches, including poor connectivity, Terastallization bugs, and UI errors. Just as a heads up - if you were running a Dondozo/Tatsugiri team, you might want to look away now…

The Version 1.0.2 update has fixed perhaps one of the most annoying smaller bugs in battles. Type matchups against fainted Pokemon will no longer appear when you select a move or target during Double Battles.

The next few fixes come from the pesky Zoroark.

If you Terastallized your Zoroark that was disguised as another Pokemon via its Illusion ability, opponents could figure you out by using the Check Target option. Not anymore! The type matchups displayed were also based on the type of the Pokemon that Zoroark was disguised as, rather than Zoroark’s Tera Type. This is a bug and will be fixed.

Next up, Dondozo.

When a Tatsugiri and a Dondozo are on the field together and love each other very much, Tatsugiri will hop into Dondozo’s mouth via its Commander ability. Dondozo can then use its signature move, Order Up, to boost its stats. This effect would happen even when the move should have been negated (for example, by an opponent using Protect). Unfortunately for some, this was a bug and will be fixed in the future.

The last fix comes from using the move Destiny Bond. If a Pokemon uses Destiny Bond on the same turn as its opponent KOs it, the attacking Pokemon also faints. However, if the user Terastallizes after using Destiny Bond and then faints, the effects of Destiny Bond would fail to activate. This is a bug and will be fixed.

Additional Fixes

This update also addresses the Copperajah in the room. What about the game’s various… quirks?

Nintendo has addressed the numerous occurrences where the game forcibly closes at certain locations for no seemingly no reason. The fix? The company has suggested they will reduce the number of Pokemon and people displayed in certain towns or in the wild. For a game that has already faced criticism from fans who believe it feels ‘empty’, this is certainly... A choice.

Next, when you received a Pokemon that is not part of the Paldean Pokedex via Link Trades, it would display as being registered to the Paldean Pokedex. This update will fix this error.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's graphics have been a point of contention since the first trailer’s release. This update will fix the error that caused certain actions to freeze the main character’s expressions until the game is closed and reopened.

Many players faced errors after Ranked Battles Season 1. When they visited the Ranked Battles screen immediately after the season’s results had been calculated, a communication error would crash the game after they received their rewards, preventing them from participating in any further Ranked Battles. This will be fixed.

If you created several Battle Teams but did not use the Battle Team in the first slot for their Ranked Battles, you might not receive the Master Rank Ribbon after winning Ranked Battles in the Master Ball Tier. This will be fixed.

On a similar note, if you traded away a Pokemon and then got it back, it may have been influenced by Ash’s Charizard, meaning it might not listen to your commands as if you did not have the necessary Gym badges. This will be fixed.

A bug prevented the Pokedex from displaying additional entries (like shinies, Surprise Trades, etc), for Pokemon species that were already registered in the Pokedex. This will be fixed.

Perhaps one of the funniest bugs in the game was the random Pokeballs that appeared in the floor. It is thought that they are leftovers from entry portal markers in development. We'll never know, as they should be removed in the patch.

Finally, no more viral tweets of passerby bugs. NPCs will no longer be displayed during certain battles that take place in towns during the main story.

The patch notes were rounded out by the promise Nintendo is planning further features and bug fixes not listed in these patch notes.
