Few Pokemon are as iconic or as powerful as Mewtwo, and in Pokemon GO, Mewtwo is just as incredible. Even without its Mega Evolutions being released, Mewtwo is one of the best attackers and all-'rounders in the entire game, and will remain so for a long time.

If you're hoping to add Mewtwo to your team and give it the best moveset, read on. We'll go over how to defeat Mewtwo in a Raid, and then which moves to teach it.

  • Type matchups are an important part of winning Raids. Check out our Pokemon GO type chart to refresh your type matchup knowledge.

Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-type, meaning it'll be weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost.

On the flipside, Mewtwo will resist Psychic and Fighting. Be sure not to bring these types up against this powerful Legendary Pokemon.

While Mewtwo has three weaknesses, Bug is not particularly strong in Pokemon GO outside of Mega Beedrill. So, it's best to stick with Dark- and Ghost-types. Here are some of the best Pokemon to bring into a Mewtwo Raid:

  • Mega Houndoom (Snarl | Foul Play)
  • Mega Gengar (Lick/Shadow Claw | Shadow Ball)
  • Mega Absol (Snarl | Dark Pulse)
  • Mega Beedrill (Bug Bite/Infestation | X-Scissor)
  • Mega Gyarados (Bite | Crunch)
  • Chandelure (Hex | Shadow Ball)
  • Darkrai (Snarl | Dark Pulse/Shadow Ball)
  • Weavile (Snarl | Foul Play)
  • Tyranitar (Bite | Crunch)
  • Origin Form Giratina (Shadow Claw | Shadow Ball)
  • Scizor (Fury Cutter | X-Scissor)

Don't forget that you should (almost) always opt for Shadow Pokemon over non-Shadows or Purified Pokemon!

Mewtwo has an incredibly wide pool of moves available to it in Pokemon GO. Some of them are, of course, better than others, but Mewtwo is so strong that it can excel with many of its options.

In PvE, Psycho Cut and Confusion are both great fast moves. Confusion may be better in general, but Psycho Cut is also really good. For a charge move, opt for Psystrike when possible. If you don't have any Elite TMs, though, you can do almost as well with Psychic. Mewtwo also has access to Shadow Ball, which makes it a great counter to Psychic types, as well as Ice Beam, Thunder Bolt, and Flamethrower, which have fun niche uses against Pokemon weak to those types. With Ice Beam, Mewtwo is one of the best Ice-type attackers in the game, funnily enough.

For PvP, Psycho Cut will typically outperform Confusion, though the latter is usable, too. As for a charge move, you can really go with Shadow Ball, Psystrike, Focus Blast, or Ice Beam, depending on what you need. Psystrike is, again, easily the superior option, but it might cost you an Elite TM. Shadow Ball and Focus Blast can make a great pair if you can afford a second charge move. Shadow Ball will go widely unresisted, and Focus Blast will cover the pesky Normal-types that resist the former move.
