Things are "clicking" into place nicely, as HBO's live-action The Last of Us series finally made some steps at this year's Summer Game Fest. Geoff Keighley's showcase wasn't just focused on games, and alongside a (bizarre) interlude with a Black Adam trailer, we also got to hear more about Craig Mazin's The Last of Us TV show.

The Chernobyl showrunner is bringing Naughty Dog's fungal apocalypse to life on the small screen, with 2013's The Last of Us video game serving as the meat of the story. Mazin and Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann have promised a faithful retelling of the source material, and from what little we've seen, that's more than evident.

What Do The Last Of Us Infected Look Like?

If you've played the record-breaking game, you'll know The Last of Us follows the USA in the aftermath of the Cordyceps infection outbreak. Ranging from the fast-moving Runners through to the rare Bloaters, arguably the most famous are the Clickers with their signature noise. If you looked close enough at Summer Game Fest, you might've been able to spot them.

Druckmann was on hand to reveal the long-awaited multiplayer standalone, the long-rumoured The Last of Us remake, and give some insight into what's going on with the series ahead of its debut next year. In our first real look at The Last of Us series, we saw Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal's Ellie and Joel skulking through a museum.

It's all pretty generic fodder that at least shows the two Game of Thrones alumni look like their video game counterparts, but if you turn the lighting up, you'll also get your first glimpse of a Clicker. Like something from a Resident Evil game, Clickers open giant flaps on their faces like a Venus flytrap and take a lot of bullets to take them down.

What Do Fans Think Of The Last Of Us Series?

Previously, our only official look at the series had shown Ellie and Joel from behind - which was hardly blowing anyone away. It's been over to a slew of sneaky set photos and videos to find out what's really going on on the set in Canada, with even the saltiest critics agreeing things have been looking pretty good. Given that Summer Game Fest gave us our first real glimpse of Ellie and Joel, we were too distracted to notice the lurking Clicker.

HBO is known for churning out epic shows like the aforementioned Game of ThronesThe Sopranos, Westworld, and more. There are similarly high hopes for The Last of Us, and while we don't know how much of the first game the series will adapt, we could be in for a multi-season order if everything goes right. Either way, it looks like HBO's The Last of Us is shaping up to be the best live-action video game adaptation there is out there. Sorry Detective Pikachu, your reign could be over
