A tech expert has revealed that keeping your Xbox Series X on its default switched off mode will set you back £132 at current electricity prices.

How Much Does The Xbox Series X Standby Mode Cost?

Alex Hern, the UK Technology Editor at The Guardian Tweeted his advice to his 72,000 followers, and managed to get thousands of likes. Many of which from people who had no idea there was a simple way of saving money during the cost of living crisis.

Hern said: "At current electricity prices, leaving an Xbox Series X on 'standby', its default switched off mode, will cost you £132 a year. Dip into settings and toggle it over to 'energy saver'. (By contrast, the PS5's default costs around £4)."

He continued: "It's generally rare for a standby mode to use as much power as a Series X does, which is why I'm highlighting it. There's been no other easy wins in my house - the router also uses around £140 a year, but for obvious reasons you're less likely to want to switch that off"

How Do You Turn Off The Xbox Series X Standby Mode?

Hern clarified his original Tweet by letting his followers know that if you set up your Xbox Series X after May 2022 then the default mode will be set to energy saving. With a final addition, he said: "Ah! Something I'd missed: Microsoft made Energy Saver the default mode in May, so my advice only applies if you set up your Xbox Series X before then. (Around 1.5 million XSX sold in the UK before May so that's still a lot of people who need to toggle)".

If you're one of the many people who bought it prior to May (like myself), then you just need to go into settings, and turn on 'Energy Saver Mode'. Simple as that.
