HBO Boss Clears Up The Last Of Us Series Release Date Confusion
HBO's The Last of Us series is shambling from the grave, as the big-budget and live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog's acclaimed zombie shooter is crawling toward a 2023 release date. While we'd already heard the Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey-led series was coming out next year, we've been left in the dark about exactly when.
Back in 2013, Naughty Dog unleashed The Last of Us onto the world and changed the landscape of horror games forever. Once a developer remembered for Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted, The Last of Us leaned into the style of the latter but told a very different story. Doing what the likes of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space did, The Last of Us helped define survival horrors.
What Is The Last Of Us Series Release Date?
We're sure you're all dying to know when The Last of Us show release date will be made official, and despite a few titbits from up high at HBO, all we've got so far is a few generic promo shots. Thankfully, network boss Casey Bloys has teased an "early 2023" release for the much-hyped series.
While basking in HBO's big win of 140 Emmy nominations across 24 HBO shows including Succession, The White Lotus, and Euphoria, he also has a glimmer of hope for The Last of Us joining the nominations next year. When asked directly on when we should expect The Last of Us to arrive, Bloys responded with, "It's closer to early 2023."
This is great news for fans of the games, HBO, and the expanding lore of The Last of Us, especially because many expected the series to land before the end of this year. Still, in a year that's been plagued by average video game adaptations like Uncharted and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (as well as middling reviews of Netflix's RE series), it might be for the best that The Last of Us is sitting this one out.
Will The Last Of Us Series Get A Season 2?
Yes, we know the first season isn't out yet, but that hasn't stopped us guessing on where the series could go next. There is a lot to unpack in the first game, and from what we've seen in the various set leaks, The Last of Us series has only filmed up to a certain point. HBO is known for its multi-season arcs, and as long as it doesn't do a Game of Thrones and drop the ball, The Last of Us series could be the network's next big thing.
The Twitter account @TheLastofUsNews shared a shot of the crew wearing sweatshirts reading "The Last of Us – Season 1", so we shouldn't even have to speculate too much about a second season. Hopefully, The Last of Us series is in safe hands. As well as Chernobyl's Craig Mazin overseeing things as showrunner, Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann was on hand to supervise and even filmed an episode. We hope you've had your booster shot because the Cordyceps infection is ready to take over in a big way.
