Though it might not seem like it from the outside, mobile gaming is an absolute giant. We're not just talking about the 2010s with iPod Touch apps, no, sir.

Competitive gaming has taken a bold step into players' pockets, with PUBG especially proving that there was plenty of success to be seen away from the intensive hardware of PC or console.

It didn't take long for the success of PUBG Mobile to spread across the industry, with other developers attempting to replicate it. Sadly, it looks like one huge developer is throwing in the towel after no time at all.

In a pretty shocking reveal, it turns out that EA will cease production on Apex Legends Mobile, as well as shutting down developer Industrial Toys - the team behind Battlefield Mobile.

The news was first revealed by a new blog post from Respawn Entertainment, which claim that Apex Legends' pocket edition would be closing as a result of dwindling quality.

"Following a strong start, the content pipeline for Apex Legends Mobile has begun to fall short of that bar for quality, quantity, and cadence," the post reads. "It is for this reason, after months of working with our development partner, that we have made the mutual decision to sunset our mobile game.

Although disappointing, we are proud of the game we launched, are grateful for the support of the Apex Legends community, and are confident that this is the right decision for players. "

It's a huge surprise to see the game tank after only launching in May 2022, but it looks like there wasn't much future for either title. In fact, it sounds like EA's vision for the future of Battlefield is what brought its mobile counterpart to an end.

Battlefield Mobile Was Canned To Work On The Series' 'Enormous Potential'

A separate blog post from EA has revealed some more reasons that both games are being canned, and it seems as though the team are looking to the future of the Battlefield franchise. "We've also made the decision to stop the development of the current Battlefield mobile title," reads the post.

"As the industry has evolved and our strategy to create a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem has taken shape, we decided to pivot from the current direction to best deliver on our vision for the franchise and to meet the expectations of our players.

"We remain highly committed to unlocking Battlefield’s enormous potential. We're hard at work at evolving Battlefield 2042, and are in pre-production on our future Battlefield experiences at our studios across the globe."

Regardless, it's incredibly sad to see the games go, and EA has offered some pretty poor excuses as to why it's decided to close down an entire team of developers. It definitely looks like the publisher couldn't handle the heat of the mobile gaming kitchen.
