One upcoming horror title that definitely doesn't look like it "sucks" is Unfold Games' Bloody Hell Hotel. While Sony's Hotel Transylvania movies make it look all fun and games with werewolves and witches, we imagine running an actual hotel is pretty hard - let alone if you're a vampire.

Although there were social simulation games before, it was Maxis' The Sims that popularised the genre in 1999. Since then, the likes of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley have muscled into the scene. In a very different part of the world, horror games have been cashing in on vampires with Resident Evil Village, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, and the upcoming release of Redfall, so what if you combined them all?

What Is Bloody Hell Hotel?

Over on Steam, you can play Bloody Hell Hotel, which creator Wlad Marhulets describes as a crossover between Stardew Valley and the twisted mind of Tim Burton. Marhulets wants to create "the most ambitious first-person simulation game in existence." Explaining a little more of how Bloody Hell Hotel works, Marhulets told the site how you can forge your own weapons and customise them for melee combat.

As noted by IGNBloody Hell Hotel casts you as a vampire that's woken up from a centuries-long nap and takes you with restoring a crumbling hotel. As well as remodelling rooms and decorating them, there are typical farming and dungeon crawling elements that continue the game's hybrid themes. The big twist comes from the use of your vampiric powers to automate parts of the hotel. These get bigger as you level up, and eventually, you can hire other vampires to work in your hotel.

Leaning further into the horror, you can even use guests as meat if you run out of product. Well, that's not scoring highly on Airbnb. Hyping the style of Bloody Hell Hotel standing out against others, Marhulets added, "My passion for gothic horror and dark comedy started in early childhood. Combining the two seemed like a perfect fit and made me feel super excited. Speaking of horror, Bloody Hell Hotel is more of a dark comedy. As the title suggests, expect some blood, but the game doesn't take itself too seriously and isn't meant to be scary." If you weren't already sold, the glossy trailer shows what you're missing out on.

Killing guests isn't as easy as it sounds, because remember, they can only pay if they leave the hotel alive. Guests with the "insomniac" trait will wander around at night and make it harder to sneak into rooms, while the murder of royalty will trigger an investigation into the hotel's goings on. You can play however you want, but according to Marhulets, replayability will be a massive part of Bloody Hell Hotel

The ambitious sim is coming to PC, with a console release (to an unknown number of platforms) also on the horizon. Sadly, when Marhulets was pressed on just when Bloody Hell Hotel is coming, he said he doesn't want to lay a concrete release only to have it delayed.  There isn't going to be an early access period, and with it hopefully releasing in its full form, he's encouraging you to wishlist it on Steam right now.
